When Kristina called me regarding her engagement session, she had just two requests, “nothing cheesy and do your thing.” Perfect! I had recently done some scouting in Detroit and found some new places I wanted to shoot. Detroit is making a huge comeback – new Red Wings arena, upgraded housing, MLS announcement, acclaimed restaurants, and plenty of unique places to photograph. With a few locations in mind, we started off for their Detroit engagement session. It didn’t take long for these high school sweethearts to warm up and have fun on their shoot. After the artistic freedom they gave me on their engagement shoot and the results that followed, I am even more excited for their wedding.
What used to once be a dark and drab city, Detroit is quickly becoming a lively tech center with new housing and commercial buildings popping up everywhere. Murals are constantly being reworked in Eastern Market and bold colors, like the ones below, are being added around town. These colors offer the perfect backdrop for a Detroit engagement session.
After spending some time in Midtown, Kristina and Rick changed clothes and headed down to one of Detroit’s artistic gems, the Detroit Institute of Arts. I love walking through the galleries of the DIA and studying the use of light in paintings as well as the posing techniques used by the artists.
Overall, Kristina and Rick had a beautiful summer Detroit engagement session. Even though it was only an hour, we were able to capture some beautiful and emotional imagery. I imagine their wedding will very much be the same.
