Valentine’s Day Proposal

Monday, February 14th, 2022

Two months ago, Peter emailed me, introducing himself asking about my availability for a Valentine’s Day proposal to his girlfriend Kellie. After talking about some of our options, we decided to meet on a cold winter day on the southern tip of Belle Isle to walk through the details. Peter had it all planned out: they would be dressed up and head downtown to visit the Belle Isle Conservatory before catching a show at the Detroit Opera House. While on Belle Isle, why not take a walk and look at the skyline? As Kellie and Peter started to walk towards the shoreline, Kellie notice the blanket with champagne and flowers. Audible squeals followed as what was happening began to set in.

When Peter took on the ring box, Kellie’s premonition proved true.

Kellie was so excited that after she shared a kiss with Peter, she asked “did I even say yes?!” Her excitement and disbelief carried with her throughout the entire afternoon.

Waiting to help commemorate and celebrate this momentous Valentine’s Day proposal was champagne and a card from Peter. I love tiny gestures like this as that card will only grow in sentiment and important throughout their lives and marriage.

Joy and laughter erupted when Kellie addressed Peter as her fiance for the first time.

After a chilly celebration on Belle Isle, we went into downtown Detroit for a few more photos…and one more surprise. We first stopped at the Detroit Public Library for some engagement photos.

As our session began to wrap up, I convinced Kellie that I had the perfect set of arches I wanted to photograph them against. In reality, Kellie’s family came in from out of town and was waiting at the London Chop House, ready to surprise her and celebrate the news!

I moved Kellie and Peter in place, with their backs to Kellie’s oncoming family. Throughout the unnecessary poses, I had them finish with their eyes closed. Meanwhile, Kellie’s family was sneaking up from behind. Once she opened her eyes, she had another incredible surprise waiting for her.

I love these moments because they are so real and authentic.
