Belle Isle Proposal

I have expressed this sentiment many times on the blog over the years: the best part of being a photographer is the people you meet.  I get to be present for some of the most special moments in life with some of the best people.  In early December, John emailed me stating his intention to propose to his girlfriend, Nicole, sometime over the holidays.  We worked together to devise a plan that would provide them with a gorgeous background, perfect lighting, and amazing memories.  Together, we decided that John would propose to Nicole at the Francis Scott Fountain on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan.  John and Nicole had a Detroit, Belle Isle Proposal.  

Thirty minutes prior to the proposal, I arrived at the fountain, scouted and confirmed my location, and texted John.  He was excited and ready as well.  I would be hiding behind the base of the statue on the north side of the fountain, which would easily block me not only from the elements, but from Nicole’s sight.  As John and Nicole rounded the fountain, Nicole innocently states, “Let’s see who this statue is” and walks right up to the statue!  It was seriously out of a movie!  Nicole was on one side, looking at the statue while I was hiding on the other side, waiting for her to leave and get proposed to.  Luckily, John acted quick and said, “Come here babe.  Let’s take a selfie.”  He then proceeded to cut of Nicole’s head in the photo, which we had a good laugh about later.  But let’s be honest, can you blame him?  I would be nervous too!

After John lured Nicole away from the statue and into position, I was free to swing around from the statue and begin shooting.  After John put his phone away, he held Nicole’s hands and began talking to her.  Slowly, he went down on a knee and Nicole realized what was happening.  She was about to spend her life with her best friend.  Love, yes, hug, kiss, disbelief, excitement, surprise, shock, astonishment, and more excitement…everything flowed right there, and I got to document it.  Belle Isle Proposal by BTW Photography.
