A few weeks ago, I posted a photo on Instagram of a maternity session I did that was special to me. I photographed their proposal, engagement session, wedding, and now maternity. What an honor to be a part of this couple’s lives. Little did I know that post would lead to a whole new genre of photography: maternity. Many of my former couples emailed me, inquiring about sessions, including Sarah and Matt. I couldn’t say no. Their wedding was so joyful, any time you spend with these two is a good time. When I asked Sarah what she has envisioned for her maternity session, she mentioned she wanted to change things up from her Detroit wedding and instead do an outdoor maternity session that incorporated less city and more nature. With that, we got to work planning their session. I wanted to highlight the tenderness of motherhood and warmth of Sarah’s personality, so we shot during the golden hour. Her outdoor maternity session visited several spots in Stony Creek and ended the only way possible, with a gorgeous sunset.
If you know Sarah, you know her laugh. She is always laughing and bringing joy to those around her.
One of the things I have really enjoyed exploring is bringing studio lighting techniques outside and into natural environments to shoot. Adding a touch of light to Sarah’s face gently encourages you to focus on it.
Sarah looked gorgeous in this dress! I wanted to give her outdoor maternity session a little touch of studio/fashion flare and posed her accordingly.
As the sun started to set on her outdoor maternity session, we headed to the water to capture a beautiful sunset. I love ending maternity sessions this way. A sunset is beautiful, but balanced with the beauty and harmony of an expecting mother makes it the perfect backdrop.
