Some love stories unfold slowly, while others just seem to fall perfectly into place. This Belle Isle Conservatory surprise proposal was the perfect reflection of Jacob and Sydney’s story. After meeting online, it only took one weekend of dates for them to realize they had found something special. Their very first date at the Detroit Institute of Arts was filled with effortless conversation, laughter, and the unmistakable feeling that they had found the person they had been searching for. Just one year later, Jacob brought their story full circle by returning to Detroit to ask the biggest question of his life.
Although Sydney was convinced a proposal would happen during their upcoming vacation to Italy in early August, Jacob had another plan entirely. The week before the proposal, Brian and I FaceTimed with Jacob while he walked around Belle Isle, carefully choosing the perfect location in front of the beautiful Belle Isle Conservatory. Every detail was thoughtfully planned. Together, we found the exact spot where one simple question would change the rest of their lives.
When July 10 arrived, everything came together exactly as planned. As Jacob and Sydney approached the Conservatory, I casually pretended to have my photo taken, and Brian quietly positioned himself to capture the moment they walked up. Completely unaware, Sydney walked hand in hand with Jacob toward the very place where her future was about to change forever.

Jacob later shared that proposing at the DIA, the location of their first date, would have been impossible because Sydney would have figured it out immediately. Belle Isle became the perfect alternative, offering the same connection to Detroit while keeping the surprise completely intact.
The moment Jacob dropped to one knee was filled with pure emotion. Sydney’s surprise quickly turned into overwhelming joy as she realized this wasn’t practice for their Italian vacation, it was happening right then and there. Seeing the excitement on both of their faces reminded us why we love photographing proposals. There is something so genuine about documenting a moment that can never be recreated.

After celebrating at the Conservatory, the four of us spent the afternoon driving through downtown Detroit. Along the way, we heard more about how they met, what made them such a perfect match, and all the little moments that shaped their first year together. Every stop became another opportunity to document this exciting new chapter while exploring the city where their story first began. We even made time to pop a little bubbly to celebrate these two and their future together!

Jacob and Sydney, thank you for trusting us with one of the most meaningful days of your lives. It was an absolute honor to witness the beginning of your engagement, and we hope your upcoming adventure in Italy is every bit as unforgettable as the surprise that started it all. Congratulations on your Belle Isle Conservatory surprise proposal!
