Getaway Proposal

After experiencing the beauty of the location in the fall, Joe returned, this time, to propose to Rose in a Getaway proposal.

“Isn’t this how most Dateline episodes start?” I joked with Becky.

I just got off the phone with Joe and agreed to meet him in the middle of the woods in a tiny town about an hour and a half north of me, so he could show me where he wanted to propose. Becky didn’t find it as funny as I did since she is a Crime Junkies podcast junkie! “Just be careful” she told me.

As soon as I met Joe, I knew I was safe. He disarming smile and friendly demeanor would make anyone feel not only comfortable, but an instant friend. Together, he walked me through what he had in mind for his proposal to Rose. In short, it was perfect: private and in a special location. We walked away from our scouting joking that the only thing that would make it better is freshly fallen snow. Fingers crossed.

Rose and Joe shared a weekend getaway at, appropriately named, Getaway The Thumb, early in the fall. They love unplugging from their stressful jobs, cozying up in the tiny cabin, and walking their dog Clementine through the nature walks there. It was their happy place.

I sat on the only bench with my back turned to the path and my camera concealed underneath my jacket. The crunching sounds of freshly tracked snow started to become louder and louder. I knew they were coming. As the approached, Clementine’s panting became too loud to ignore. I turned around and acknowledged her “Hey girl!” and gave Joe a quick nod. He and Rose passed me, along with the camera I hid behind a fallen tree. When Joe got into his place, he paused, handed Rose Clementine’s leash and embraced the moment.

Rose knew. She immediately started laughing a joyous laugh of disbelief. It was probably the most genuine and heartfelt proposals I have been a part of. As Joe got down on a knee, Rose too fell to her knees. “You know it is a ‘yes!'” she said. They laughed, they kissed, the celebrated. It was beautiful.

In all of my years of photographing proposals, this Getaway proposal will always be special to me. I can’t help but get teary-eyed watching the joy between Rose and Joe as their lives become one.

After Joe and Rose dropped Clementine off at the cabin, we met back in the woods to take a few photos. They still were as happy as the moment Joe proposed.

After the proposal, we hiked back to their cabin, popped some champagne, and celebrated a bit more.
