Surprise Proposal on Belle Isle

After eight years together, Lester knew exactly how he wanted to ask Monique to spend forever with him. On Friday, August 14, he pulled out all the stops for a surprise proposal on Belle Isle that was as thoughtful as it was unforgettable.

The day began with Monique believing Lester was at work. As a nurse, it wasn’t unusual for him to be at the hospital. Still, Lester had one clever detail to handle: he had a close friend bring his iPad to the hospital so that when Monique checked his location, it would appear he was exactly where he was supposed to be. Meanwhile, more than 30 of their closest family and friends were quietly gathering for the surprise, with loved ones traveling not only from across Michigan but also from New York and California.

Monique spent the day exploring the city with friends, and as the afternoon came to an end, they decided to make Belle Isle their final stop to take in the sunset. Little did she know, Lester was already waiting.

As Monique walked toward the spot Lester had carefully prepared, a smile spread across her face as the pieces came together. A blanket and beautiful flowers were waiting, with the Detroit skyline stretching across the water behind them. Lester took her hands and began to speak, and then, one by one, her family and friends began walking toward them, surrounding the couple in one of the most meaningful moments of the evening.

What followed was everything you could hope for in a proposal: hugs, happy tears, laughter, excitement, and the overwhelming joy of having so many of the people they love there to celebrate with them.

After the proposal, we spent time photographing Monique and Lester with family and friends before taking them away for a few quiet portraits together. Against the Belle Isle skyline and soft evening light, they finally had a moment to take it all in: eight years together, one unforgettable question, and an entire future ahead of them.

And Lester wasn’t finished planning. He had arranged a special dinner for the newly engaged couple and their family, giving everyone the perfect way to end such an incredible day.  Some proposals are about the question. This one was about eight years of love, a whole lot of planning, and bringing the people who matter most together to witness the beginning of their next chapter. Congrats Lester on pulling off such a thoughtful surprise proposal on Belle Isle! We wish you both the best!
