Van Hoosen Farm Rochester Engagement Session

Have you ever met someone who is so kind-hearted and genuine, you want it to rub off on you?  Or perhaps you walk away asking yourself, “What am I doing to better the world like this person is?”  Enter Alexa.  Elementary school teacher, dance instructor, advocate for breast cancer awareness, and genuinely awesome person.  I met Alexa last year at the BRAvo! Breast Cancer Fundraiser that I volunteer at every year.  We only spoke for a few minutes, but her impression was lasting.  I walked away thinking, “Anyone whose life she crosses is a lucky person.”  So what could make this story more perfect?  Enter Tom, her high school sweetheart.  Equally nice, funny, and genuine.  Van Hoosen Farm Rochester Engagement Session with Alexa and Tom.

Alexa and Tom decided to have their engagement session at Van Hoosen Farm and Museum in Rochester, MI.  It is an old historic dairy barn that was given to the city and turned into a museum.  The grounds are gorgeous and offer a variety of nature-filled backdrops all within walking distance of each other.  I love shooting at Van Hoosen and encourage any of my couples who are going for this look to shoot here.  You can see some of my other engagement and portrait sessions here.

A couple quick tips for anyone who is looking to schedule a fall engagement session:

  • Plan your shoot early.  This is the busiest time of the year for photographers.  It seems like every family wants photos on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. the first two weeks of October.
  • Be flexible with your time.  The weather this time of year is unpredictable.  Some days it is warm and beautiful, others it is cold and raining.
  • Colors look best right after rain!  Don’t be afraid to put on some boots and walk through soggy grass to get the perfect shot.
  • Lastly, the sun sets earlier and earlier every week.  This last shot was taken right around 5:30 p.m.  Not exactly the golden hour timeframe we are used to in Michigan, but that is what you get in October.
  • Wear appropriate colors and clothing to really pull off the fall look.  Sweaters, boots, scarves, plaid are all great this time of year.
